Boats on the Norfolk Broads

Sail the Norfolk Broads and see what’s for sale

Under the wide Norfolk and Suffolk skies, the horizon broken occasionally by a yacht’s mast or a windmill’s sails, the Broads are a wonderfully natural and tranquil environment. There is little wonder that The Broads are hugely popular as a holiday destination. These waterways remain as popular as ever as a place to sail. Many people ‘sail’ the Broads on a holiday cruiser of course, but for the purists there are countless opportunities, and boats, to harness the wind and do it for real. From a gentle potter to a full on race, sailing is still very much part of Broads life.

But, aside from being able to sail on the Broads, this is a very good time to look at what’s for sale near the Broads. If you haven’t considered buying your own UK holiday home before, here’s some food for thought.

What are the Norfolk Broads?

The Norfolk Broads (and Suffolk Broads) are Britain’s largest protected wetland and the country’s third largest inland waterway. Now holding National Park status, the area is home to some of the UK’s rarest animals and plants.

They’re steeped in history too. Lord Nelson learned to sail on the Broads. Amazingly, it wasn’t until the 1950s that it was finally confirmed that these unique lakes are the result of medieval peat diggings and are man made.

Boats on Oulton Broad

Invest in a UK holiday home in Oulton Broad

Oulton Broad is often called the gateway to the Broads. A neighbour to Lowestoft, Britain’s most easterly town, it has easy access to the Broads as well as the sea. For those who have the experience (and the boat) it’s easy to make sea-going journeys from here. Suitable craft can make it to Aldeburgh for example. Great Yarmouth is possible too, opening the possibility of navigating through the rivers Yare and Waveney.

And Oulton Broad is within easy reach of so much of what Suffolk has to offer. This is where you’ll find Southwold. Seaside towns don’t come much more charming than this. With its lighthouse, art galleries and award winning pier, it’s a jewel of the Suffolk coast. And, of course, it’s home to Adnams Brewery. - enough said!

This part of Suffolk, where countryside and coastline make for a perfect marriage of scenery, is idyllic. It’s blessed with lots of places to see and explore. It’s never been better as somewhere for food and drink. There is always an event, a festival or a market going on somewhere in Suffolk. And yet it’s still so natural. It’s so unspoiled. It’s the perfect location for a Suffolk holiday home.

Just a short drive away is the historic market town of Beccles, or head in the other direction to take in stunning Norfolk villages like Haddiscoe, St Olaves, Fritton and Burgh Castle. Or head a little further to the seaside at Gorleston or Great Yarmouth. There’s so many things to do in Norfolk, so many pubs to visit and so much scenery to take in. Like we said, the location is perfection.
